8th Grade PLC

You will need your instruments and music. Today we will be working on Uptown Funk Michael Jackson's Thriller and My Favorite Things along with 3 chorales and a new steady beat / rhythm game. You will also be receiving UpTown Funk.

We are entering a national competition with our Thriller Flash-Mob video below. The details are here: http://www.giveanote.org/programs/music-in-our-schools-tour/

There is an important notice going home today regarding the Music in Our Schools tour.

You did an AMAZING job with all of this last week, and everything is now "roughed in." Our goal today is to polish and move every piece from a 2 to a 3. In the case of Thriller we want to move from a 3 to a 4.

We will be covering 3 major scales and the chromatic scales in warm ups, and making sure we have Smart Music and Embouchure / technique goals set for everyone, and that you know what those goals are! There is a TON to do. Drummers, we need to make sure our 6 essential rudiments are memorized and that our multiple bounce rolls sound "tight" and controlled.

Everything we do today will be with student conductors! We will be using thumbs up and thumbs down technique so I know who to help as I play with the band. We will use the thumbs up thumbs down information to break into groups and do sectional rehearsals and teams in the hall way if necessary.

As always, these may help:
Michael Jackson's Thriller:

My Favorite Things:

Uptown Funk:

Our Plan:
1) Welcome!

4) Western Region Audition Etude. Review of scales style for Western Region.Sharing of videos created for each scale, which are now on Google Classroom.

Break for Lunch

5) Preassess Uptown Funk

7) "Thumbs up / thumbs down:" Who needs help and on what section? Direct instruction and sectionals and teams outside to address needs.

8) Run through with Mr. Akter conducting.

9) Post assess: Was there growth? If so, why? If not, why not? What needs to be addressed next?

10) Repeat above rehearsal protocol with the remaining two pieces.

Hi All!

Welcome to our band rehearsal. Today our goal is to find a replacement piece for Pink Panther (which the band asked to remove from the program) and master / polish A Little Mozart Suite and Antiquitus. We are also going to work in sectionals today and play one music game as a brain break during the rehearsal.

     1) Red book #s 16, #24 (two parts), #39, #51, #63, #81, #88,#131

4) Listen to our pieces. While you are listening Mr. Akter will hand out music to those who do not have it.

5) New Student Conductor: Warm up by running Mozart Suite

6) After we polish Mozart Mr. A will conduct it once as if we are performing it.

7) Antiquitus is next. We will start with student conductors and Mr. A will reinforce sections by playing with each group. We will do thumbs up thumbs down formative assessment so that Mr. A can reinforce any section that needs it.

8) We will post assess Antiqiutus. Is it a 4? If not, why not?

9) Our first potential replacement for Pink Panther is "Jingle Bell Rock." You will find a copy on your music stand when you come in for rehearsal. Mr. A will model it once for you. We will do some work in sectionals, and then return to full band rehearsal for run throughs with student conductors.

10) BRAIN BREAK! At this point in the rehearsal we will break for a game of teacher vs class to reinforce the rhythms in Jingle Bell Rock.

11) At this point Mr. A will introduce and discuss our 3 other potential replacements for Pink Panther. These are Wipe Out, Raider's March, and Batman theme. I will be emailing the band a link to each song to listen to along with a google form to discuss.

12) Run through the concert as is (Mozart Themes, Jingle Bell Rock, Antiquitus) Discuss needed improvements for next rehearsal.

You will need your instruments and music. Today we will be working on Uptown Funk Michael Jackson's Thriller and My Favorite Things along with 3 chorales and a new steady beat / rhythm game. You will also be receiving UpTown Funk.

WOW what an improvement on Uptown Funk last rehearsal! We went from a relatively low "1" on our performance rubric to a solid "2" in ONE rehearsal. You guys were GREAT! Taking the time in lessons to go over the band music clearly helped, but you did the work, and you should be proud! Today we need to reintroduce My Favorite Things and work on polishing Thriller and Uptown Funk. I also will be reminding you about our Polo Shirt order. Those of you in jazz band and orchestra also need to be turning in your permission forms!

We will be covering 3 major scales and the chromatic scales in warm ups, and making sure we have Smart Music and Embouchure / technique goals set for everyone, and that you know what those goals are! Hi All!

Today we are going to be polishing our pieces. At this point we should be mostly comfortable with the notes and rhythms. I would love to hear Mozart and Antiquitus be 3s or 4s today, and I would like Pink Panther to be a high "2" if not a "3" on our performance rating scale.

Also today we need to turn our polo orders in and those of you in jazz band or orchestra need to turn in permission forms for the Senior Center performance.

These recordings may help!

Hi All!

Our last band rehearsal was AMAZING. You really took the new the band rehearsal rubric and ran with it! We managed to fulfill every goal, "roughing in" the entire concert. Great job! Now we need to start polishing. You really enjoyed the student conductors last class, so we are going to do more of that today.

I will be playing with various sections of the band today to help you out. We are going to be using a lot of thumbs up / thumbs down so I know where to go inside the rehearsal to help folks out. We are also going to be working with our 4 point rating scale.

I know it is tricky to try an play a full band arrangement from "scratch" so we are going to use a variety of techniques to help you understand "how it sounds" as we progress through these songs! These may help us. They are videos of a middle school band playing Pink Panther, Antiquitus, and a professional recording of A Little Mozart Suite! We will be using this especially to help us practice at home.
