7th Grade PLC

You will need your instruments and music. Today we will be working on Uptown Funk Michael Jackson's Thriller and My Favorite Things along with 3 chorales and a new steady beat / rhythm game. You will also be receiving UpTown Funk.

We struggled with "Uptown Funk" last rehearsal 7th grade, but I KNOW you can do this, even though it is challenging. YOU CAN PLAY THIS with PRACTICE! My goal today is provide the necessary scaffolding to make sure everyone is comfortable with Uptown Funk. We are starting with that after warmups.

We will be covering 3 major scales and the chromatic scales in warm ups, and making sure we have Smart Music and Embouchure / technique goals set for everyone, and that you know what those goals are! There is a TON to do. Drummers, we need to make sure our 6 essential rudiments are memorized and that our multiple bounce rolls sound "tight" and controlled.

Everything we do today will be with student conductors! We will be using thumbs up and thumbs down technique so I know who to help as I play with the band. We will use the thumbs up thumbs down information to break into groups and do sectional rehearsals and teams in the hall way if necessary.

As always, these may help:
Michael Jackson's Thriller:

My Favorite Things:

Uptown Funk:

Our Plan:
1) Welcome!

2) PACK and Band! (review)
     a) BRIEF review of our norms
     b) IMPORTANT. Is there anything you need today to be successful.

3) Warm Ups and Tune - "Tradition of Excellence Book 2 - Page 2 and page 42. Explain Bb, Eb, and F Concert major scales, the chormatic scale, the chorales, and audition requirements.

4) Western Region Audition Etude. Review of scales style for Western Region.Sharing of videos created for each scale, which are now on Google Classroom.

5) Preassess Uptown Funk - Direct Instruction.

6) Rehearse Uptown Funk. Rehearsal techniques include student conductors (Mr. Akter will play with various sections to reinforce how the parts sound in your mind) sectional, and direct instruction.

7) "Thumbs up / thumbs down:" Who needs help and on what section? Direct instruction and sectionals and teams outside to address needs. At this point I will be pulling out ALL my instruments and playing with each section on their instruments. We will also play each sections part for the band while the band fingers, and make recordings of each section that we can post on Google Classroom to help with home practice.

8) Run through with Mr. Akter conducting.

9) Post assess: Was there growth? If so, why? If not, why not? What needs to be addressed next?

10) Repeat above rehearsal protocol with the remaining two pieces.

11) Assignments for practicing.

12) Email Mr. Akter for exit ticket.
