Here is some important information that some of you without internet might not have received when I emailed last week: Our concert has been rescheduled for the 13th of June due to the storm. Band Activities

Attention bands!

I am thrilled we have school tomorrow! Our concert has been rescheduled to June 13th so that we have time to make sure everyone is ready for the performance. An updated letter about this will go home tomorrow. Tomorrow is Wednesday and I would like to have orchestra rehearsal for all students who can attend. Tomorrow is a "B" day. The schedule for the week is as follows:

Wednesday: Orchestra after school
Thursday: 6th grade band during excel
Friday: 7th and 8th grade during excel. Jazz band after school.

7th and 8th Grade After School Rehearsal

Learning Targets: 

I can collaborate with other students to evaluate where we are in terms of concert preparation and plan for the remaining month.

Lesson Plan: 

1) Objective discussion (brief! 2 min)

2) warm ups - lip slurs and long tones (brief! 2 min)

3) Scale Sheets

4) Run through Russian Sailor's Dance (is it a 4? if not, why not?)

5) Run through the Best of Queen. Is it a 3? If not, why not?

6) Drum set auditions for the Best of Queen. Who is interested?

7) Entirety of The Best of the Beatles.

8) Closure

Band This Week

Happy Mother's Day! 

It is our second (and last) SBAC week! I've scheduled rehearsals in the gaps when students are not testing.

Important: Our concert is approaching next month (May 29th). The letters for the concert with details went home two weeks ago during band rehearsals and I emailed the announcements home as well. Monday: Mandatory 7th and 8th Grade Band Combined Rehearsal after school @2:45
Tuesday:  Mandatory 6th Grade Band after school rehearsal @2:45
Wednesday: 7th Grade Band Rehearsal Period 2. Orchestra after school @2:45
Thursday: 8th grade band will rehearse period 1 on Thursday
Friday: 6th Grade Band will rehearse period 5.  Jazz Band after school @2:45

Period 5 and After School 6th Grade Band Rehearsal!


Welcome 6th Graders!

Learning Targets:
I can play define an excellent embouchure and model it!
I can define excellent technique and model it!
I can play the Concert Bb, the Concert Eb, and the Chromatic Scale
I can play The Final Countdown completely!
I can play Don't Stop Believing Completely!
I can play the introduction to Thinking Out Loud.

Today's plan:
1) Welcome and warm up - Scale Demonstration and band warm ups (5 minutes)

2) Conducting Practice (5 minutes)
     a) We will start with conducting. ALL members of the band will practice the 4/4 beat pattern at various volume levels. We will practice counting while the conductor speeds up and slows down.

3)  Don't Stop Believing -15 minutes -
      a) We will start with conducting. ALL members of the band will practice the 4/4 beat pattern at various volume levels. We will practice counting while the conductor speeds up and slows down. Then we will bring up student conductors for Don't Stop Believing. Mr. Akter will play will various sections to reinforce including the drummers. We will find out who is interested in playing drum set on Don't Stop believing and/or The Final Countdown at the concert.

4) Don't Stop Believing discussion. Was it a 4? If not, why not? How can we make it a four? Make notes on discussion for after school portion of rehearsal (5 minutes)

5) The Final Countdown - 15 minutes
    a) Again with student conductors.

6)  Thinking Out Loud introduction (15 minutes)

7) Break to return to homeroom. After homeroom, you will return the band room.

8) Outside for recharging / team building activities! (Snowball and switch spots quick!) (15-20 minutes total including walking outside)

9) Return to the band room for rehearsal.

10) Drum set auditions for Don't Stop Believing and The Final Countdown - Run throughs and feedback between run-throughs.

11) Thinking Out Loud.

12) Closure - run the concert as it is now. Discuss plan for improvement before the 29th.

Band This Week During SBAC

Band activities the week of May 7th

Monday: Jazz Band after school @2:45
Tuesday: 6th Grade Band will rehearse during period 5 and after school until 4pm. There will be a break for fun activities given the length of the rehearsal.
Wednesday: 8th grade band will rehearse at 10:30 during their team time block. Orchestra after school @2:45
Thursday7th grade band will rehearse from 12:45-1:30 during their team block.
Friday: Jazz Band after school @2:45

6th Grade Band

2 Welcome and warm up - Scale Demonstration and playing (2 minutes)
3) Thinking Out Loud - Demonstration of introduction and playing of introduction with student conductors. 15 minutes
4)  Don't Stop Believing - 5-10 minutes
5) The Final Countdown - 5-10 minutes
6) If time revisit Thinking Out Loud briefly.
7) Discussion of post testing on Embouchure and Technique.
8) Closure

Concert Announcement

Concert Announcement
Music Department - NFMS


Dear Band and Orchestra Parents,


The band program's end of the year activities are fast approaching. Our concert will be held Tuesday, June 13th at 7:00pm. The students must report at 6:15 to the auditorium. Our in school concert will also take place on the 13th.

Concert dress (for both the in school and evening concerts): Boys: blue music department polo shirt and black pants (NO JEANS or SHORTS) and dress shoes (NO SNEAKERS) Girls: blue music department polo shirt and black dress slacks (no skirts) and dress shoes. (Flats are preferred. Minimal heels only please. Students must either climb the stairs onto the stage or stand on the risers. High heels present a possible falling hazard).


Thanks for all you do to encourage your children!


On the back of this letter is information about our end of year food drive on behalf of Relay for Life!

Band Council Food Drive
(Concert Announcement Page 2)

The Band will be organizing a canned food drive in conjunction with the concert! We are looking for canned goods. Please bring a can with you to the concert! The Band Council will have boxes in front of the auditorium clear marked. We would be very appreciative if you grabbed a can from the pantry on the way to the concert. All food will be donated to the New Fairfield Food Pantry.
