6th Grade Trombones, Beginning Saxes, and Trumpet

Learning Targets:
1) Beginning Saxes: I can play Manhattan Beach March
2) Trombones and Trumpet: I can play Largo and Just Fine
3) I can play Star Wars at a 2 (if I am a beginner) and at a 3 if I have been playing for a year
4) I can play the into to Harry Potter at a 2.
5) I can read quarter note, eighth note and sixteenth note patterns
6) I can define and play lip slurs (brass players)
7) I can define and play long tones (saxophone players)
8) I can define and form a good embouchure
9) I can define and form good technique

Lesson Plan:
1) Beginning with warm ups: we will start with our books and discuss long tones and lip slurs
2) Breaking into teams we will work on our assigned songs for today
3) We will work on Star Wars as a whole class. We will be playing the ENTIRE song today
4) Review the embouchure and technique challenge. Who wants to model?

2) I can play Star Wars from the beginning to end at a 3 on our 4 point rating scale.
3) I can play the introduction to Themes from Harry Potter at a 2 on our 4 point rating scale.
4) I can explain our embouchure and technique units (including how we will use student modeling to improve both embouchure and technique)

Our Plan: 
1) Review the rules and expectations for class! We'll talk about our Core Pack Values and how they relate to band.

2) Standard of Excellence Book 1 review! Last week we did not demonstrate mastery of Largo and Just Fine, so I reviewed them with you and did some reteaching! Today we'll begin with Theme from Symphony #9 as a warm up. Then we will move on to Largo and Just Fine.  If you do not have your book do not panic! I have extras for most instruments. If I don't have an extra you can look on with a friend. But from now on PLEASE remember your book! 

3) I am sure Largo and New World will be mastered. We will be moving on to Riccochet Rock on page 34

I can play Superstition accurately on drum set and know about the "funk" style. 


Part One: Stevie Wonder's Superstition. Start with teacher model. Then break into teams (2 students on each drumset). There are online resources to assist on Google Classroom.

Part Two: Review drum assignments. Try and play through all of Superstition with one person on Drum Set

Part Three: Tradition of Excellence Book 2! Review page 5. Introduce page 6. Work on page 6 in teams.

 Part  Four: All three drum set styles! What is the fundamental subdivision? How can use rudiments and the fundamental subdivision to create fills.

Assessment! You all played the basic beats competently and well, keeping a steady beat and playing stylistically. Now we need to work on our fills in all three styles. We will check in our progress next week.
